The Religiosity of Party Activists

At first glance it would seem that the primary influence of religion on party alignments derives from vestiges of the old ethnocultural divide between the high-status Protestant "mainline" churches on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the "coalition of religious minorities" including the Catholic, Jewish and Southern Protestant traditions. Although recent studies of American religion have noted a great deal of change in individual religious choice (Roof and McKinney 1987), Table 7.1 shows that the ancient confessional ties of the parties are mostly intact. Among Republicans, the mainline Protestant denominations are still the church home of almost three-fifths of GOP activists, with Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Methodists and smaller mainline churches comprising the "Republican Party at prayer." More theologically conservative Protestants, such as Baptists, and a miscellany of evangelical, charismatic and fundamentalist churches add a significant minority.
